Dear Friends,

As of May 12, it’s been 112 days since the Refugee Admissions Program was halted. While legal battles continue to unfold in federal courts, the outcome remains the same: approximately 12,000 refugees–who had completed the complex legal process and had travel plans to enter the United States as of January 20th–remain in limbo.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, May 11, 59 South African refugees boarded a flight to the United States. They were fast-tracked through the refugee process in less than three months. This is a sobering reminder that our country’s ability to process refugees quickly through the legal process is not in question; the real challenge lies in the political will to make it happen. I am praying (fervently!) for those in positions of influence to have the courage to honor our nation’s promises made to those 12,000 people approved for resettlement.

Despite the tumult of the last 100 days, our work at Friends of Refugees remains unchanged. Our staff remains focused, and we are busier than ever, with New Americans seeking out our services earlier than before, as they experience reduced services and resources in other areas.

We remain unwavering in our commitment to walk alongside our New American neighbors as they navigate their new home. As a Christian nonprofit, our faith calls us to reflect God’s welcome and His special affection for the vulnerable, including those fleeing war and conflict. We also believe that, as Americans, we are called to uphold our nation’s promise to welcome those who endured the long and arduous journey to become legal refugees and who are now in limbo—including Afghans who put their lives at risk in service to U.S. forces.

As our friends and supporters: your voice, your prayers and your encouragement matter deeply. Thank you for the many ways you have reached out to show support for our staff and the New American community.

Please continue to use your voice and join us in praying for mercy and justice to reach every displaced person who is separated from their home and family.

With courageous hope,

Kendra Jeffreys

Executive Director
