Through the Friends of Refugees Summer Youth Experience, we seek to nurture the development, talents, and skills of refugee youth and their families to be healthier and stronger together.

Many youth in Clarkston grow up faster than the usual. They are responsible for their siblings, have chores crucial to their family’s well-being, and have families that depend on them for language and culture help. We have found that youth in Clarkston are happy to support their families, however in the process, they often miss some of the great fun it is to be a child. Summer Youth Experience is a place where we can celebrate kids for who they are and the leaders that they are going to be. We see kids playing, learning, and growing into people of excellent character.

Summer Youth Experience provides programming to help prevent summer learning loss and improve both physical and mental health outcomes through academic support and engaging, trauma-informed fitness classes. We also seek to nurture student’s own talents and develop positive, supportive relationships with their peers and staff.

Friends of Refugees Summer Youth Experience 2022 is a program at the Kristopher Woods Apartment complex in Clarkston and is only for the youth who reside there. Programming is from 12PM – 3:30PM PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for K-5th Graders and every Thursday from 12PM-2:30pm for 6-12th Graders, June 6th – July 29th.  There will be no programming July 4th-8th.
